Regarding, "For Sovereignty, Europe Must Have Its Own Defense" (Opinion, May 30) by William Pfaff: What's so wrong about Europe seeking to establish its own independent military? NATO was created to counter the no-longer existent Soviet Union threat. Under U.S. leadership, which failed to understand the complexities of Balkan history, southeastern Europe has been destabilized, decimated and poisoned by NATO. American leaders should be focusing on their domestic problems. Let the Europeans take care of themselves. MICHAEL PRAVICA
