    KAL

From the top of the European World Music charts, a band from Belgrade brings Romani roots into the 21st century

Romani music concert and dance to benefit Voice of Roma

    Download the flyer

"Kal's music is fresh and unbelievably good."
    "...passionate, joyous"
"...transcends generations and brings about the new soul of Gypsy music while holding on to the old traditions."
    " ...their groove is unstoppable"
"...digging deep into Romani culture, creating music that is not only looking to the fields & byways, but to skyscrapers ... & cyberspace"
    "...soulfulness to spare"

"Kal are the hottest Gypsy band from the suburbs of Belgrad, rock'n'roll in attitude, fuelled on urban beats and rooted in the Balkan blues... [In their new album] bhangra rhythms underpin one song, a violin dances around a two-step rhythm played on double bass, weeping Hawaiian steel guitar drifts over a lovely waltz tempo, an accordion feeds tango flavours, Montenegran rock satirist Rambo Amadeus delivers an acerbic, hiccupping rap whilst the striking voices of Zumrita Jakupovic, Adil Maksutovic and Dragana Berakovic lend earthy, sensual qualities to the songs. Recorded on a bare bones budget at Dragan's ramshackle home studio this brilliant, intuitive album shifts Gypsy soul into cyberspace..." (From the record label -- Asphalt Tango Records)

Movie Event: "Six Years Older" (Documentary on Serbs in Kosovo) by Ivica Vidanovic

On Tuesday, April 11, the The Fletcher School invites you to the following event: INCR Movie Event: "Six Years Older" (Documentary on Serbs in Kosovo) by Ivica Vidanovic.

Summer 2005. Six years after the end of the Kosovo war, the UN's "sustainable multiethnicity" does not exist but on paper. Serbs in Kosovo are deprived of basic human rights and fundamental freedoms: the freedom of movement, property rights, the right to work, even security. "Six Years Older" documents 15 personal and spontaneous stories about and by Serbs in Kosovo.

Here is a comment of one viewer:

"There are one sentence introductions to each of the stories and those introductions include naked facts without comments of any nature. [..] These 15 stories provide dry facts which do not appeal to the heart, but rather allow the viewer to judge with clear heart and mind on how does the everyday life of a Serb in Kosovo and Metohia look like now. It does not differ, though from how it looked like in 1987 - please refer to the 1987 article of David Binder in New York Times, "In Yugoslavia, Rising Ethnic Strife Brings Fears of Worse Civil Conflict": http://www.kunstradio.at/WAR/binder-nytimes.html

KOSOVO AND METOHIA, 17-19 MARCH 2004: POGROM

NINOSLAV RANDJELOVIC, AN INDEPENDENT DOCUMENTARY FILM PRODUCER AND AUTHOR FROM SERBIA, TO PRESENT HIS LATEST DOCUMENTARY AT MIT

As a result of the latest eruption of violence in Kosovo & Metohia, March 17-20, 2004, described by an UN officer as a "Kristallnacht," 28 people were killed, about 600 wounded, over 4,000 Serbs and other non-Albanians were forced to flee as some 500 of their houses were set on fire and another 34 Christian churches and monasteries were destroyed by Albanian extremists. A number of UN and NATO officials have confirmed that this has been an orchestrated terrorist action of ethnic cleansing aimed at expelling the Serb population from the province.

Ninoslav Randjelovic, an independent producer and author of documentary films from Belgrade, Serbia & Montenegro, has been a witness to the unfolding tragedy of Kosovo & Metohia since 1998, recording many of these events on film. On Thursday, April 29, at MIT in Cambridge, he will present his latest exclusive video footage from Kosovo & Metohia of some of the consequences of the last acts of terrorism and ethnic violence in a documentary titled “Kosovo and Metohia, 17-19 March, 2004: Pogrom.” He will also present two of his previous exclusive footages: “Kosovo and Metohia, 1998-2003” and “The Days Made of Fear: Kosovo, April-September, 2003”, surveying the progressive deterioration of human rights conditions in the province since the misrule of Slobodan Milosevic to the mismanagement by the UN and NATO.

This material has been presented already at several academic institutions in the United States and Europe, including Columbia University in New York, Sorbone University in Paris, France, and at the "Youth of Europe" conference in Budapest, Hungary. Mr. Randjelovic's documentary work has been featured also on BBC and ARTe, and at international film festivals in London, Paris, Berlin, Athens, Moscow and Belgrade. Also, he was awarded for his work at the Raindance film festival in London, 1999, and at the Golden Knight film festival in Moscow, 2003. Following his presentation at MIT, he will present this material at the United States Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., at Berkeley University in Berkeley, CA, and at the upcoming Golden Knight film festival in Moscow, Russia.

The movie projection will take place at:
    Building 1, Room 1-190
    Massachusetts Institute of Technology
    33 Massachusetts Avenue
    Cambridge, MA

This event is co-organized by the Serbian-American Alliance of New England (SANE) and by the MIT Organization of Serbian Students
